Chris Govier pictured above farms
100 acres and produces 250 prime lambs a year. He is also a professional
sheep shearer. |
When you buy lamb or mutton from Somerset lamb direct it
will come from either our own farm or one of our neighbouring Exmoor farms. We
have selected local farmers who we know produce lambs to the same high
standards that we demand for our own flock. All our local producers are
Farm Assured, (as are we) this means we all undergo an inspection once a
year to ensure that we comply with certain welfare and safety standards on
our farms. But of greater importance is the fact that all of us are
experienced farmers who love the land and respect our animals.
At present we are supplied by
nine local farms. As a result of the difficulties being experienced in
farming at the moment Somerset Farm Direct is a benefit to local farmers
as it allows them to be paid a fairer price for the product they produce
than they would otherwise be paid through other outlets.
Apart
from working together to sell our lambs direct to the public, there are
many other interactions between the 9 farms. Chris Govier
helps us to shear our sheep. His father Ken not only farms,
but is also a professional fencer (he puts up sheep fences rather than
using a foil or épée!), he has also just bought a second-hand mower for
cutting hay and silage fields - he did a very neat job on our hay field in
July. Roger North has a mobile sheep dipping unit which he
rents out to his neighbours. Bill Norman is a farmer and a
contractor and he cuts, bales and wraps our round-baled
silage.
